Why Escape From San Francisco to the Wilderness

San Fransisco is a major city within California, with approximately 4.7 million individuals living here, making it the 12th largest city in the United States. Within our city, we have seen an alarming rate of addiction as well as drug and alcohol-related deaths.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a report discussing the prevalence of addiction and other mental health concerns in the San Francisco, Oakland, and Fremont area. According to this report, approximately 21.9% of individuals 12 and older in our area reported using any illicit substance. This is higher than the state average of 16.8% and significantly higher than the national average of 14.7%.

For individuals who received a clinical diagnosis for a substance abuse disorder between 2005 and 2010, more than half of these individuals were also struggling with a major depressive episode. The rates for depressive episodes were slightly higher for the San Francisco, Oakland, and Fremont area. Lastly, this report from SAMHSA reported that our area also had higher rates of binge drinking when compared to the rest of California.

More recent statistics showing the concerning rates of drug use in our city can be found in the 2020 Preliminary Accidental Overdose Data Report released by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. From January to October in 2020, 1,340 individuals in San Francisco died as a result of an overdose. 81% of these individuals identified as male, while 19% identified as female.

This report included overdose deaths that resulted from the use of fentanyl, heroin, medicinal opioids, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Fentanyl was found to have contributed to the most significant number of deaths. This was followed by methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and lastly, medicinal opioids.

With a large number of residents like San Francisco has, we would expect to see high rates of drug use. When you look at the specific numbers that research has found, you may feel overwhelmed. There is no denying that there is a large number of individuals in our area who are in need of help for addiction and mental health treatment in northern California.

When you begin looking for a rehab in San Francisco, you will see that there are many programs available to you. This allows you to be selective about which treatment program you choose to go to. A significant factor that will help you narrow down your options would be the location.

Many people find that choosing a rehab program outside of the city can be helpful. This can give you some distance from potential triggers. Going north of San Francisco can bring you to a beautiful area in our state that has majestic Redwood Forests.

What to Look for in a San Francisco Rehab Center

If you are at a point in your life where you are looking for a San Francisco rehab center, there are a few qualities you will want to look for. As mentioned above, the location is essential. Ideally, you would choose a program that would provide you with comfort and a sense of safety so that you are able to focus on your addiction treatment fully.

Finding a drug rehab near San Francisco that offers a detox program would be ideal. Many programs will offer this; however, you will want to double-check. Detoxification is a common recommendation for those who are planning on beginning a rehab program. It gives your body the time and space needed to adjust to having no drugs in it. This can be uncomfortable and dangerous given your drug of choice, so we would highly recommend a medically supervised detox program in Northern California.

The ”nuts and bolts” to a rehab program is their treatment itself. You will want to look for a program that has a multidisciplinary staff and utilizes evidence-based practices. Having staff with a variety of educational and personal experiences can only benefit you in your treatment. Evidence-based practices are clinically proven approaches to addiction treatment that would be the most impactful for you.

It will be important that the program you choose is able to offer you individualized care. Everyone has a different story and progression to their addiction, which means that your treatment should be different as well. For example, suppose you have any mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, and other mood disorders. In that case, you will want to choose a rehab program that can provide you with mental health care. Individualized care could also mean that the rehab offers specialized treatment options for men, women, professionals, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
